One of the many benefits of owning a home in Mexico is the relatively inexpensive cost of hiring domestic help. It is very common for homeowners to have a housekeeper, gardener or a pool maintenance person, with wages averaging about $15 USD per day.

For those owning a rental property in Mexico, there will generally be a property manager and a maintenance person on staff. And many people even choose to hire a driver or even a personal assistant to help them with daily errands.

With the Christmas season fast upon us, these hard working staff not only deserve but are legally entitled to a Christmas bonus, called an “aguinaldo”. The aguinaldo is required to be paid by December 20th of each year and is a way of both showing gratitude to your employees and providing extra money to help them celebrate the holiday season. By Mexican law, the aguinaldo must be equal to 15 days of regular wages, or a half month’s salary. If your employee has been with you less than one year, that amount may be pro-rated.
